SUMMARY:Dope is Death - A Documentary Film Night
DESCRIPTION:Join the qathet Community Action Team and Cinema Politica qathet for a documentary film night and panel discussion at the Patricia Theatre on Wednesday\, February 25th\, at 7pm. By donation. \n\n\n\nAbout the film: Dope is Death (2020)\, a film by Mia Donovan. In 1973\, Dr. Mutulu Shakur\, along with fellow Black Panthers and the Young Lords\, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America. This form of radical harm reduction was a revolutionary act toward the government programs that transfixed the lives of black and brown communities throughout the South Bronx. Dope is Death utilizes an abundant archive while giving us insight into how the acupuncture clinic rose to prominence and\, despite funding challenges\, still functions to this day. Some of those who benefited from the program became acupuncturists themselves. Dr. Mutulu’s legacy is cemented within this profound story of community healing and activism.

SUMMARY:Artist Trading Card Night
DESCRIPTION:Do you know about Artist Trading Cards? Whether you do or don’t\, we hope you’ll join us for ATC nights with host Harvey Chometsky. \n\n\n\nIn short\, Artist Trading Cards are self-made unique works or small series\, signed and dated on the reverse by the artist/producer\, exchanged and collected by the people who participate in this collaborative event. There are only 2 “rules”: the cards must be 2.5″x3.5″ (the same as modern hockey cards or baseball cards)\, and they are only to be traded\, not sold. \n\n\n\nMake them ahead of time\, or make them on the spot. We’ll bring some blanks and other art supplies. \n\n\n\nAnd this is a family-friendly event!

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Intro to Gel Printing
DESCRIPTION:WORKSHOP: Intro to Gel Printing With Jennifer Love We are delighted to welcome Jennifer Love back to qathet! Originally from Ottawa\, Jennifer lived in Australia for 16 years before returning to Canada’s West Coast\, where she now resides in Gibsons\, BC. Printing with a gel plate often feels like it is in the realm of magic. It is a recent addition to the artist’s toolkit and is gaining traction as an essentially painterly method that allows for multiple yet unique prints from the same plate\, without a press. This three hour workshop is suitable for those new to Gelprinting as well as those who wish to refresh their basic skills in an atmosphere of exploration and discovery. We will cover the fundamentals – colour blending and gradations\, creating textures\, using masks and stencils\, the use of different viscosity paints\, building a composition and registering multiple layers. https://www.qa-w.ca/workshops
